Puff

Puff, ein unabänderliches Wörtchen, welches den dumpfigen Laut nachahmet, welchen manche Körper, besonders im Stoßen und Fallen verursachen, und welcher gröber und dumpfiger ist, als diejenigen, welche man durch Piff und Paff ausdruckt. Siehe diese Wörter.

Puff, puff wird es auf deinen Buckel geben, tax, tax erit tergo tuo; wo das Lat. tax zugleich das Stammwort von dem Nieders. tageln, prügeln, und vielleicht auch von unserm Stock ist. Wie sehr sich die Natur in Nachahmung der Schälle und Laute, und folglich auch in Erfindung und Bildung der Worte, getreu bleibt, erhellet unter andern auch daraus, daß die Negern in Afrika ein Europäisches Feuergewehr nicht anders als Puff zu nennen wissen; ein Wort, welches eigentlich den Knall desselben nachahmet und ausdruckt.
